Intermediate Riding Courses in Fullerton, CA

Intermediate Riding Clinic / CMSP 1-Day Premier Course (With Licensing Option)

The Perfect Next Step for Newer and Returning Riders

Developed by Total Control Training, the Intermediate Riding Clinic / CMSP 1-Day Premier Course is the perfect next step for newer riders who are looking to improve their skills as well as riders that have recently returned to riding after years off. This course includes both classroom and on-cycle instruction.

The IRC/1DPC is based on the most current research in rider safety, utilizes modern training methods and has been proven to enhance student outcomes. Although designed primarily as a safety course, the course is also challenging and fun and it is completed in one 8-hour day.

Licensing Option

The California Motorcyclist Safety Program offers experienced students who take the 1DPC—but are not licensed—the opportunity to achieve intermediate-level skills along with their motorcycle license, in which case riders will also have the option to either take it on their own motorcycle or do it in one of our available loaner bikes.

IMPORTANT: Students who attend this class to obtain their license must be at least 21 years old and will be required to demonstrate fundamental riding skills by passing a basic riding evaluation at the beginning of the class, similar to the Motorcycle Skills Test applied by the California DMV. You must successfully complete this test in order to continue with the rest of the class. Students will have 3 attempts to pass the pre-entry exam. If the students are unsuccessful, they will be dismissed and recommended to take the beginner course. A partial credit will be provided towards a beginner course. Students should have recent motorcycle riding experience (within the last year), if they have not ridden recently, it is recommended that students register for a beginner course instead.

Riders who already have their own bike and a motorcycle license can be this course without the testing requirements. Just present your valid M1 license, your registration, and your proof of insurance when you arrive and enjoy the class!

What It Covers

Throttle Control

The single most important control on your motorcycle is the throttle. This is because—beyond speed and acceleration—it applies forces to so many aspects of your bike's handling, including traction, suspension, weight transfer, steering, stability, and ground clearance. Knowing how to skillfully apply the throttle is one of the major distinctions between good riders and great riders.

Brake Control

Because emergency stops can be scary due to the limited amount of traction you have and how much it would hurt to kiss the ground, very few riders practice quick braking and even less have the actual knowledge and skills to do it safely. During our IRC/1DPC, you will learn and practice the right technique to achieve short stops so you are prepared when you need to brake quickly and avoid a hazard.

Vision

Vision is, without a doubt, the most fundamental skill for proper riding. The majority of decisions made while riding are based on information coming in through your eyes. The main reason for vision being so critical is that you go where you look but even experienced racers struggle with maintaining proper vision through the corners. You will learn why riders go where they look and how you can use your eyes to your advantage and safety during every ride.

Line Selection

Unlike cars, motorcycles can take a lot of different lines through a particular corner. Some of these lines will help you make a safe and serene progression through the bends, while others will ruin your perfect ride! During our IRC/1DPC you will learn how to plan and follow proper lines on every corner of the road.

Low Speed Turns

Few activities in street riding can be as frustrating as having to make a low-speed, tight turn in a limited amount of space—especially if you don't know the technique. Fortunately, it is one of the easiest skills to learn. In fact, most riders are able to reduce their minimum turning diameter by 30 to 40 percent in as little as five minutes of practice!

Evasive Maneuvers

Swerving around an obstacle at speed can be a life-saving technique but it requires skill and practice to avoid surpassing the available traction of your tires and crashing during the maneuver. During our IRC/1DPC, you will learn and practice the technique necessary to do it safely when the emergency arises.

Road Speed Cornering

During our IRC/1DPC, you will learn how to put together the throttle control, vision, line selection and body position techniques to practice safe turns at road speeds during your everyday rides.

Riders who complete the IRC/1DPC report significantly improved riding skills, confidence and the ability to make better choices about when and how to ride. The IRC/1DPC is also used extensively by the Navy and Marine Corps as "Level 2" training (within 60 days of completing a beginner course) and "Refresher" training (every three years) to reduce crashes, injuries and fatalities. It is officially recognized for Level 2 training by the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard, which satisfies requirements for active duty service members and civilians to get their base sticker to ride on base.

The Intermediate Riding Clinic / CMSP 1-Day Premier Course Promises

Our team is committed to making you a better and safer rider and, in doing so, makes these promises:

  • Specific, measurable improvement in your riding

No matter what skill level you are now, the IRC/1DPC will make a recognizable difference in your ability to control your bike.

  • Better understanding of how your bike works

How what you do affects your bike's ability to maintain traction and control.

  • The ability to self-diagnose riding problems in the future

While it's great to be able to ride better in front of a skilled coach, it's equally important to be able to coach yourself when you detect a riding problem in the future. There are enough support materials in our package to help make sure you won't forget what you learned during your training.

  • High teacher-to-student ratio

Each class is divided in groups with never more than six students per instructor for lots of individual attention and support.

  • Friendly, professional service

Our instructors are highly trained and carefully handpicked for their teaching abilities and friendly dispositions. Your experience at the IRC/1DPC will be a positive one.

"I recently got into riding again after a long time, so I decided to take the intermediate one-day training as I felt a little rusty and thought it would be a good idea to seek professional training. They allowed me to do the whole training on my own bike, but also offered nice 300cc BMWs that looked brand new. The course is well planned, and many important topics are covered, like throttle control, emergency braking, slow and high-speed maneuver, swerving, etc. The class structure is also great as we kept alternating between sitting class and riding. My instructor, Taylor, was very skilled and shared excellent knowledge. He would first demonstrate the exercises on his bike and provide detailed instructions. When it was our time to ride, he would keep advising me on how I could improve or do better. After a few runs, we would then be skill tested and move on to the next subject. At the very end, we took a multiple-choice test of 25 questions, which was relatively easy as we had just covered all topics during the day. After the course, I feel way more confident about riding, and I learned many skills that every rider should know. It's also important to note that although we learn valuable skills and improve our riding during the class, we still need to keep training to take them to the next level. Overall, I think the course is worth it and would recommend it to a friend; I also got my endorsement which is a plus on top of all the learning. For people with no riding experience tho, I would recommend the beginner course instead. I spoke briefly with their instructor, and he seemed like a very nice guy."

"Had a blast at this course. They have really nice bikes, you can choose from g310rs and rebel 300s. The helmets they let you borrow was top notch. Ive never even sat on a bike prior to this course and was able to learn all the basics. A friendly tip, make sure you study the handbook they email you and watch a couple videos on youtube on shifting, cornering, leaning, etc. With all that you would have no problem passing."

― Jaime Bueno
"Even though I am new to motorcycles and had no prior experience this class is a must take. The instructors Bob and Ryan are really passionate teachers. I told them this is my very first time ever riding motorcycles. They were very reasonable and understanding. Unfortunately I struggled at bit with shifting gears during the last portion of day. Before heading over to the class room I approached Ryan for my evaluation and told him honestly that I knew that I struggled with gear shifting, prematurely letting go of the clutch, and not properly using the throttle. He definitely said the exact same, he recommended reading that I read the handbook over, and call the office on Monday to get on standby to retake the class again. He really cares about helping his students and wants them to do good. Despite failing the safety class, I learned a lot from this great experience."
― Patrick Workman
"Just finished this course today. Super fun class. As long as you pay attention, ask questions, and truly build on the skills they teach you ... your on the right path to pass. I passed but even if I hadn’t I thought it was run very very great by the two instructors Chris and Bob. But most importantly ... I had a lot of fun and learned a lot of valuable & life saving skills. Thank you!!!"
